Program Description

Description

Given that English knowledge and American culture have come to provide a defining and internationally acceptable model
of communication in world’s politics, economy and cultural exchange programs, acquiring proficiency in English has gained
an utmost importance.

The major objective of the department is to train our students with a good knowledge of English; nevertheless, we are
also well aware of the fact that reading, writing, speaking and discussing in the target language, when stripped of its
background formations such as its history, literature and cultural ways, brings not much of a scholarly qualification to the
graduates’ expectations to a highly codified and complex structures awaiting for them in their future lives.

Department of American Culture and Literature primarily focuses on American culture and literature with an
interdisciplinary and intercultural approach. The program aims to raise the students' level of awareness, help them to
develop different and critical viewpoints and to make them adopt the process of learning and research as a way of life.

Educational aims

The department has the following overall aims:
to analyze, compare and evaluate various works of literature through close reading and creative and analytical writing;

to discern and analyze the rhetorical strategies authors employ and consider applying some of these strategies to
enhance their own writing when appropriate;

to participate in active class analytical discussions;

to express analysis and practice writing skills through academic writing assignments and in-class essays, term
papers etc;

to apply spelling, proofreading, basic grammatical and editing skills to augment their writing;

to demonstrate knowledge of the basic design and types of multi-paragraph essays;

to improve their vocabulary skills primarily in the context of literature;

to analyze and appreciate samples of significant works of American literature from each period;
to develop cultural sensitivity by getting acquainted with the historical and socio-cultural milieu of the west;
to identify significant human values and experiences relevant to national life and life in general.


Learning outcomes


By the time of graduation, students will gain:

An ability to apply knowledge of English and American studies to the fields of relevant interest. 

An ability to analyze a problem, identify and define the literary works within the good command of English. 

An ability to design, implement, and evaluate literary knowledge to meet desired needs.

An ability to demonstrate an understanding of professional, ethical, legal, security and social issues and responsibilities.

An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.

An ability to recognize of the need for, and an ability to engage in, continuing professional development.

Assessment strategy

Assessment is, in the majority of courses, via tutor-marked assignments, set at intervals through the course, together
with an end-of-course examination. Some courses have an end-of-course project or special assignment instead of an
examination.

Career Opportunities

Upon completing the program, they may find employment as teachers and translators in different educational institutions.
English Language and American Studies Program is a very versatile field. Therefore, the program gives graduates a wide
range of distinguished career opportunities. Public and private sectors (public relations, tourism, banking, advertising,
ministries, and media organs) may be appropriate for the department's graduates who are provided with an excellent
background in English as a foreign language.
