A CAREER BRIDGE FROM EUROPE TO FUTURE
Student Attendance Reports
Student attendance reports are prepared on the last education day of each semester before final exams, delivered to Students' Affairs and then submitted to the university administration.
Student attendance reports aim to determine to what extent students attend courses, investigate the relationship between the states of course achievements and to identify non-attendant students. Lectures in the university take 14 weeks. Students are required to continue courses at 72% by the decision of the university senate. This ratio requires 10 week mandatory attendance. When religious, national and ethnic holidays are actually taken into consideration, some students are seen to continue courses for only 9 weeks of classes. Taking into account the actual status of students who report an illness, duration of training may regress down to 8 weeks. While education declines in band of 55% - 60% attendance, in theory, it means also the rate of decline in the quality of education. Students who attend only 10 weeks and who are successful, in one way or another, does not mean that they are well-trained in that course. To pass the exam does not necessarily qualify that the student is well-educated. If a student participates in class discussions, take notes and memo, raises the question, does the assignments on time, receives feedback, has debates and negotiates issues with friends, he/she can take the advantage of education and better catch up quality education. The policy of our university is not the only physical participation; on the contrary, active participation. Active participation is carried out in a joint effort with students and faculty members, but it requires a two-way interaction and relationship, not one-way. The following topics are examined in student attendance reports:
1. The report of students with physical and active status participation.
2. Behavior of students during lessons (Note-taking, calculator, books and other teaching material to bring the classroom.)
3. With index notebooks to come along to the courses.
4. Causes of absenteeism of students who cannot continue.
5. What are the courses with high number of absences?
6. The validity of the reports brought by students who have reported.
7. Which faculty members gave full attendance to the all course registered students, instead of real attendance reports?
8. Which faculty members did not keep attendance and timesheets or not prepare timely reports?
Course attendance monitoring the situation is done separately for each hour. Faculty members determine their own methods to do this. Attendance for exercise courses is done by assistants and they are combined with lecture attendances. The failure to participate in practical classes cannot be accepted.
Complaints as regards that some faculty members do not pay attention to attendance reports whereas some others take it very seriously are issues to be investigated. Course attendance shall be applied as an example uniformly without exception, which is a university principle. Otherwise, it would be seen as an injustice against some students and would decline in the quality of education. In this respect, the aim of student sttendance reports is to develop an awareness of this issue and to provide an understanding of no compromise on this issue at all.
Student attendance reports are taken into consideration at the beginning of the next semester at Rector's Board meeting.
