From Dean

I congratulate you, dear students, for having the privilege of starting to study in Faculty of Languages, English Language and American Studies.

Department of English Language and American Studies (ELAS) majorly focuses on American culture and literature with an interdisciplinary approach. This department must be considered as `the center for perfection`. We provide you with courses and programs which will contribute to your vision, knowledge and analytic thinking. We, by all means, prepare an environment which encourages investigative research through a great variety of courses. This modern approach aims to educate you, unlike classical memory based approach, by questioning the world around. The program aims to raise the students  level of awareness , help them to develop different and critical viewpoints and to make them adopt the process of learning and research as a way of life.

In addition to the dynamics of English and American culture, the program also analyzes the USA s political system, social and economic structure, entertainment and mass communication industry, art, history as well as its lingual, religious and regional framework. Thus, the department not only encourages the students to conduct interdisciplinary studies but also enables them to benefit from the research techniques of different areas of science.

The program is also adaptable to minor and double major degrees. As a result of interdisciplinary studies, our graduates may pursue post-graduate programs. Upon completion, they may find employment as teachers and translators in different educational institutions. Public and private sectors, such as public relations, tourism, banking, advertising, ministries, and media organs, may be appropriate for the department s graduates who are provided with an excellent background in English as a foreign language. Our department works in collaboration with United States Cultural relations office in order to raise intercultural understanding. Our students participate in Erasmus program successfully and gain experiences in living and studying abroad.

Western Civilization History ,  Academic Reading and Writing ,  American Literature ,  American History,  American Art   American Theatre ,  American Poetry ,  American Novel ,  American Short Story ,  American Political History ,  American Foreign Policy ,  American Media ,  American Social Structure  and  Ethnic America  are among the curriculum of the department.
