The Department of Psychological Counseling and Guidance is a vital academic unit within the university dedicated to preparing students for careers in counseling, guidance, and mental health services. The department offers study programs in the first and second cycle. The first cycle study program includes courses from the area of Education/Pedagogy, Psychology and Counselling which enable the students to master a wide range of topics related to the field. Students learn about: education in general and its impact on individual’s all-round development; teaching methods and guidance strategies applied in educational context; psychological aspects in individual’s development and behavior; psychological assessment techniques; counseling theories and their use in various setting and with different clients; issues related to mental health etc. Programs emphasize ethical principles, confidentiality, and professional standards in the counseling practice. Students learn about ethical dilemmas, legal issues, and cultural considerations in counseling relationships. Furthermore, the department organizes various types of workshops, field trips, visits to and cooperation with schools, special education centres, social service centres and other, aimed at providing the students with the opportunity to connect theory to practice and broaden their experiences and perspectives of the future profession.
The second cycle program in Professional Orientation and Career Counselling encompasses guidance, career counselling and human resource management areas. Program includes courses related to vocational guidance, career counseling, and human resource management. Students learn about counseling the clients in exploring career options, making decision when choosing a profession, set goals, to use career planning techniques and to navigate career transitions.
In the recent years, the scientific focus and research work of the academic staff from this department has been on topic related to well-being, mental health, leisure time, intercultural competencies, comparative studies in school counselling etc.
