HIST 413 History of Arab-Israel Conflıcts
This course will discuss the evolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict from its origins in the late 19th and early 20th centuries until the present. It will explore the rise of Arab opposition to the Zionist enterprise in Palestine and the deterioration to war between the Jews and the Arabs in Palestine followed by the outbreak of the first Arab-Israeli war in 1948. The course will analyze the first post-war negotiations between Israel and its Arab neighbors and discuss the reasons for their overall failure. It will explain the transformation of the conflict into the Arab-Israeli dispute, which initially marginalized the Palestinians as an autonomous player, followed by its post-1967 refocusing on the centrality of the Palestinian dimension, particularly after the conclusion of the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty.
